Frosty

I was given the above pictures with the hopes of a winter themed hat.  This was for the thirtieth birthday of a friend who moved to MN from Texas, just because he wanted to live in a region with weather extremes.  We definitely have that!  He absolutely loves snow.  So, I thought it would be cute to make a snowman wearing the birthday boys favorite sweatshirt and hat.

This is a sphere cake (used the sports ball cake pan again) on top of a cake baked in pyrex bowl on top of a 10" circle cake.  The whole thing was covered in vanilla frosting (a bit rough to look like a snowball).  The sweatshirt is made out of fondant as are the letters (cut out in two colors, one a bit larger to look like outlined letters.  The arms are made out of chocolate.  I have a plastic dowel on the inside that the chocolate arm sits in so that the weight of the fondant wouldn't break them.

The hat was piped with an up and down motion in three colors to look like the weave of his hat.  The carhart logo was made on out of fondant.  Eyes, nose, and mouth were piped on.  Final touch was the scarf which was also out of fondant.
The most challenging part of this cake?  My husband had just tore the miniscus in his knee and we had been in the ER with him and to the doctor for several appointments after.  Then 2 days prior to the execution of this cake I ended up with a kidney stone.  Ouch!  Back to the ER.

We were able to finish the cake and deliver it to the restaurant for the surprise party.  This was the first cake I had taken to a public place.  It was fun to walk into the restaurant holding this cute little guy.  The wait staff could hardly believe it was a cake.
